Glasgow has today unveiled its bold vision for the 2015 World Gymnastic Championships, which will be hosted in Scotland for the first time in 2015.
The 2015 World Gymnastics Championships will be one of the largest sporting events ever to be held in Glasgow with an anticipated 525 gymnasts from 80 countries taking part in 10 days of competition. The championships will arrive in Glasgow 15 months after the 2014 Commonwealth Games and will result in an estimated £5million direct economic benefit to Scotland’s economy.
Today, two of Team GB’s medal winning heroes at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Beth Tweddle and Daniel Purvis, visited The Hydro for the first time as the new Glasgow 2015 World Gymnastics Championships brand and website were unveiled.
The championships are a qualifying event for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and will result in high levels of international exposure for Glasgow. Previous World Gymnastics Championships generating 253 broadcast hours to a worldwide audience of more than 800 million people.
Councillor Gordon Matheson, the Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The 2015 World Gymnastics Championships will continue Glasgow’s proud sporting journey. It will bring together the world’s best gymnasts for what will be an incredible 10 days of competition in a genuinely world-class sporting venue.
“There may well be just under three years till the event itself but we are working tirelessly to make sure that the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships is an event that Glasgow, Scotland and the UK will be proud of. The eyes of the world will be on us and we will not disappoint.”
